Many of the clothing in the 60's consisted of bright swirly clothing and vivid designs. Women wore short skirts and many men wore tunics and capes. In addition to these, vests and beads were worn by many hippies. This type of clothing totally contradicted the clothing that was worn in the 50's.

In the sixties, people wore bright colors, tie dyed shirts, and many had long hair and beards. Women started showing more skin than ever before. In the early sixties, women still dressed conservatively, but in1964 that all changed. Women became more daring. Plunging necklines, low cut skirts and dresses, and flashy patterns were common. Everyone was coming "undone." The late sixties brought out a new side in people. They were wearing and doing things that no one would have ever thought of attempting in the fifties. The sixties were a time of change and controversy in the clothing industry.

Fashion could now be used to distinguish between levels within the middle class and even within the poorest classes in the United States. With more people benefiting from prosperity and the culture moving further away from the idea of post-war rationing, the way a lot of people interacted with fashion began to change. Much of the clothing could straddle the line between formal and casual and clothing could be mixed and matched to make many different outfits for different occasions. Many more outfits began to feature slimmer and sleeker lines with A-line and shift dresses being amongst the most popular fashions for women and tapered dress shirts being popular with men.
